After hearing from Shirley Waters during a school assembly that the Nairobi school was without any flushing water for their toilets, the pupils at Swanland Primary School in East Yorkshire began fundraising. The kids were so moved at learning about the contrasting conditions at the two schools that they were committed to raise the money to buy the pump and make a difference. “The commitment and determination of the children is great to see”, commented Ray Woodward, Head Teacher at Swanland Primary School, “they set their target and raised the money in no time”.
During the February visit to the school, the new Charity Trustees were able to see the pump installed to provide flushing water from a local groundwater pit to the toilets. Richard Swain said, “It was great to see the results of the fundraising and take photos and video footage to take back and show to our kids in Swanland. It makes such a difference for them to see how their fundraising is improving living conditions at the school. We were even able to get a sink fitted with fresh water for the hand washing, which is a real step forward”.
